President's Message

CCR – President’s Letter                                                                         March  2010

Our last meeting was at Lentini Communications in Berlin. Alex Lentini gave us an overview of what

they carry and the services that they provide. Of special interest was his demonstration of CB radios.

In other car clubs, many have CB radios and they are indispensable. Being able to communicate with

all cars on the tour minimizes confusion. Then if there is a change of plan along the way, the revised

plan can be sent out as fast as you can talk and all with radios can hear your message.

Along with that he gave a history of how they started several decades ago by his father. For the past

30 years or so they were on Garfield St. in Newington. Just recently they moved to a larger building

in Berlin. Their website is: lentinicomm.com

Our Spring Banquet is April 17th. Be sure to get that form sent in as soon as possible before the

deadline to save you some $$. Print out the “printable form” from the newsletter for your

convenience.

In Sunday’s Hartford Courant of Feb. 17th there was an interesting article written by Jim MacPherson.

The title was: Buying a used car?? Do the Math . It points up the differences if selling your present

car to someone vs. trading it in with the dealer. It depends on a few factors namely the price of the

new purchase and the sales tax that you’ll pay. It could cost you hundreds of dollars if you’re not

careful. If you’d like a copy of this whole article, let me know and I’ll make a copy for you.

In Nov. 2008 I had this experience buying a ’03 Chrysler Town & Country family car from a private

party. It needed new tires and some body work amounting to $400. I negotiated a price and when I

went to register it I presented the bill of sale. To the DMV it made no difference what I paid for it.

They look it up in their book and whatever that used car is worth, that’s what you have to pay in sales

tax. I said, “had I known that, I wouldn’t have bought the damn thing”. No consolation; that’s what it

is. If you want to protest, there’s a form to fill out and send to the state. (fat chance to get a refund

from a state that is billions in debt, so I did not protest, it would have been a waste of time)
